Main screen

From the main screen you quickly access the environmental ambience that you want to playback and the intensity of the environment.

The intensity it’s dynamic and different for each environment, i.e. forests have more fauna, cities have denser crowds and traffic.

On the right side you can see the “Day/Night” button which you can use to change between day and night, this is environment dependent and different for each environment. You can choose on the app’s preferences for that to happen automatically and set the time intervals and a sound to notify you.

Next you see the “Weather” button which you use to apply weather conditions. The weather is played back differently if you are in an “indoor” environment at the moment, simulating how it would be heard from “within walls”.

From the “snapshot” camera icon on the top-right, you access your favorite environments’ list, while on the bottom there are different tools for dice. The “FX” button gets you on the special effects chooser. The “Mixer” button offers a quick access to the main sound settings, to use while playing.

Directly from the main screen you can choose to browse different lists of environments, those are:

  • Nature: Includes all natural locations like forests, mountains, etc.
  • Town: Here you will find more urban setups, towns, taverns, etc.
  • Dungeon: It wouldn’t be a real storytelling tool if it didn’t include a complete category for dungeons now, wouldn’t it?
  • Battle: Special battle soundscapes, for when that epic moment arrives!
  • Special: Time traveling, extra-dimensional domains and other otherworldly places are included here.
  • Music: DMDJ includes 151 music tracks of various genres to help you create the perfect soundtrack for your sessions. You can add your own too.

Quick dice

DMDJ includes a quick dice section, that you can access from the main screen, to quickly throw a dice.

You can also activate the “additive” mode and each dice you throw gets added to the previous value, so you can quickly throw a bunch of dice.

Or you can be more sophisticated and activate the “matrix” mode in which you can choose one type of die to throw and DMDJ will display the results of all dice and an statistical analysis of how many dice rolled each number.

Dice formula

If simple quick throws are not your cup of tea, DMDJ also offers an advanced dice formula editor, in which you can create your own dice throwing formula.

The formulas you create are accessible form the main screen, from the “Advanced Formulas” button, which leads to a list of all your formulas, where you can click and get the result directly.

That way you create your own “handful of dice” each time, together with custom modifiers, and store them for quick access with one click.

Custom dice

On top of every type of dice that DMDJ offers, we even created a special category of “Custom Dice”, with its own specialized die editor.

Using this section, the storyteller can create custom dice, with custom sides that feature whatever names the storyteller likes, add weighting so that the die is fixed statistically, and even add special sound effects to some or all of the sides, so each time the custom die is rolled, a sound effect that fits the event can announce the result.

Each custom die gets saved in a quick access list, only a click away form the main screen.

You don’t have to know about formulas, just make your own die and roll it. Instant result with sound effects on top!

Frequently asked questions

DMDJ is designed to be used through a wired connection with a Hi-Fi sound system. You can also use it through the wireless link form your mobile device to your home TV or speakers, as with any other app. If you have a sound system capable of reproducing all audio spectrum from low bass frequencies up to the high range, you will have a full experience of the environments and effects. You can also use the stereo-to-surround mode that many modern sound systems have, together with a surround speaker configuration, to immerse everyone in the room.

Although we optimized DMDJ a lot for mobile use, it would be better to use your phone connected with a power source, so you can be sure that nothing will interupt your sessions. This goes for any multimedia player in general, and even if DMDJ only plays back audio, don’t forget that it’s a procedural soundscape synthesizer that plays 20-35 audio tracks at the same time, with processing and filtering in order to add a natural sound with proper acoustics for each different environmental setting you select. Having said all that, most users with a moderate mobile phone report to as that DMDJ is good to go for around 3 hours without being plugged to a power source.

When you put DMDJ on the background the app will pause audio playback, but you will not lose any of your settings. That happens because DMDJ processing uses hardware acceleration from your devices multimedia processing units, to achieve the high level of simulation needed for the natural acoustic result that you get. When an application uses that kind of hardware acceleration, it is locked by the operating system designers (mainly Google and Apple) that the apps will pause when moved to the background. We cannot do anything to change that and we suggest you use another device if you have more digital storytelling tools, or mix and match between using them on the same design.

Yes, on the Android platform and devices with “exotic” screen ratios like 20:9 or 19:9 or other very long layouts, the app’s interface cannot function properly. Some of our users could change their screen settings and make it work, while others used another device with conventional screen size and form. We encourage you to download and try it with your device, and if it doesn’t work you can always get a refund according to the store’s policy.
